The merchant and the parrot

2018

The "merchant and the parrot" is one of the best known stories from the collection of the Masnavi written by Rumi,
the famous persian mystic and poet of the XIIIth century, who has deeply inspired Sufism, and Western poetry.
For this allegorical text, evoking what is true freedom, David Balade reveals a serie of 10 unpublished illustrations, inspired by Indo-Persian miniatures of other stories of Sanskrit tradition, such as the Tutinama, or the Panchatantra, recounting other adventures of the parrot.

« O you who have become a singer to (both) commoners and the elite:

become “dead” like me so that you may find deliverance! »
